If you are uncertain of your mental health coverage provider, APA.org recommends you do the following:

  1. Check to see whether your coverage uses provider networks. Call your insurance company to ensure we are listed by your plan as an in-network provider.
  2. Ask about copayments. A copay is a charge that your insurance company requires you to pay out of pocket for a specific service.
  3. Ask about your deductible. A deductible is the amount that you must pay out-of-pocket before your health insurance makes any payments.
  4. Ask if you need a physicians referral or an authorization code in order to begin utilizing services.
  5. Confirm the mental health coverage is through the company listed on your instance card, and not through a subsidiary insurance company. If you find it is through another company, bring in that companies information (including address) to ensure appropriate billing.
